Community, Collaboration, and Innovation: My GSSoC Experience as a Program Manager
GirlScript Summer of Code (GSSoC) through the eyes of a Program Manager, where challenges become opportunities.
In the world of open-source software, every line of code tells a story, and I've had the incredible privilege of penning a chapter in that narrative as a Program Manager at GirlScript Summer of Code (GSSoC). The past 6 months have been a whirlwind of challenges, triumphs, and heartwarming connections that have left an indelible mark on my journey. Alongside my fellow PMs, Nawed Ali, Sreelakshmi, and Praniti, we embarked on an adventure that tested our mettle, pushed our boundaries, and redefined what's possible in the world of open-source collaboration. Today, I can't wait to take you on a ride through our shared journey! ๐
During this program, I had the privilege of assembling a dream team, akin to the Avengers. We handpicked 27 talented individuals, each possessing their unique superpowers. From content wizards to design maestros, PR pros to marketing gurus, and even event wizards โit was like having a mini superhero squad right by my side๐ช
Now, brace yourselves for the magic that happened! Our marketing campaign was nothing short of legendary. We shattered records with a jaw-dropping 18,000 contributor registrations in just 15 days and a whopping 25,000 registrations in 3 weeks. And the cherry on top? We took over Twitter for two full days, proudly trending at numbers 1 and 4! ๐ฆ
As things started rolling, we faced some challenges, especially in securing sponsors in a tough and recession-hit market. But here's the remarkable part โ we never lost hope. Leading the sponsorship team, I felt the pressure, but we approached it like a treasure hunt. After countless attempts, we finally secured a platinum sponsorship deal and three more from fantastic in-kind sponsors. What's more, we wowed our sponsors by delivering 90% of our promises within 14 days, forging a long-term partnership with a budget that's 5X times bigger for future events in advance. How did we pull it off? ๐ค
Lots of friendly chats, persuasive emails, and some artful negotiation, that's the secret! ๐ง
Our online family also witnessed tremendous growth. LinkedIn transformed from a cozy 53,000 followers to a bustling 77,400, while Twitter became a lively party with 7,607 followers (up from 4,290). As for Instagram, it evolved into a cool hangout spot with 2,200 followers. But we didn't stop at home base โ we partnered in 17+ countries, collaborated with 137 college chapters, and joined forces with 14 student-led communities. GSSoC truly went international!๐
Now, here's where it gets heartwarming. Our Discord family flourished to over 11,600 members and became more than just a virtual space. It became a home where ideas were shared, friendships were formed, and support was always just a message away. Staying connected was our mantra, and we kept the spirit alive on our Discord server, ensuring that everyone felt heard and valued. ๐จ๏ธ To every member who made our community what it is today, thank you for being the heart and soul of GSSoC.
๐ The most beautiful part of leading such programs is the profound impact it has on the student community. I was continually inspired by the enthusiasm of thousands of students, especially those who were newcomers to the open-source world. Their energy is nothing short of infectious!
I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the incredible team who made this journey possible. Your dedication and hard work have been the driving force behind our success. ๐
And to the founders, Anubha Maneshwar and Mohit Varu for initiating GirlScript Summer of Code; and advisors Suvraneel Bhuin , Rebecca Elisabeth Falcรฃo and Harsh Ghodkar who gave us this incredible opportunity, thank you for believing in us and allowing us to make waves in the open-source world.
As this chapter comes to a close, I'm excited about the next adventures that await us.GSSoC has been more than a program; it's been a transformative experience, one that has left an indelible mark on all of us. Thank you, GSSoC, for the memories, the challenges, and the growth.
PS: Got the chance to represent GSSoC at Web3 Conf GOA ๐. YES YES!! A FULLY FUNDED GOA TRIP!๐
Let's continue shaping the open-source world together! Together, we're not just learning and growing; we're crafting something truly remarkable in the open-source realm. ๐๐ค
